What is palliative care?
Palliative care is the treatment, care and support of people with life-limiting illnesses, an illness that they will not recover from. These illnesses, such as late-stage cancer and dementia, are progressive, meaning they get worse over time.
Palliative care helps those with life-limiting illnesses have the best quality of life as possible using a holistic approach that combines pain management and emotional and spiritual support, as well as providing support for loved ones also.
Some people receive palliative care for years. It can be given at the same time as treatments or medicines; however, it can also be given to those close to the end of their life. This is called end-of-life care.
Palliative care in a care home.
Palliative care in a nursing home is provided by qualified nursing staff. Here, they can find specialist 24/7 support and assistance with daily tasks.
At Randolph Hill, we offer a palliative care approach, supporting our residents both clinically and emotionally. We tailor care plans to the individual and do everything we can to help them be comfortable and reassured.
When to consider palliative care
Making a decision about palliative care can be difficult, emotional and overwhelming. There is no ‘right’ time, it’s a decision based on multiple factors and the overall quality of life of your loved one.
If your loved ones’ symptoms are difficult to manage at home, their care needs are becoming increasingly complex or they are frequently being admitted to hospital, it may be time to consider palliative care in a nursing home. This type of care can provide great peace of mind, better symptom control, and improved comfort.
At Randolph Hill, we’re here every step of the way to make the process as smooth as possible for you and your loved one.
Our palliative care plans are never-one-size-fits all. We ensure each plan is tailored to the individual and their needs, easing them into the transition from curative to comfort focused care.
